Va, pensiero (Nabucco)
by Giuseppe Verdi
The "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" from Act III of Nabucco, Verdi's breakthrough opera. A unison melody of heartbreaking simplicity, it was adopted as an unofficial anthem of Italian unification during the Risorgimento. The chorus builds from a hushed pianissimo to a passionate fortissimo climax before subsiding. It remains one of the most powerful and moving choral moments in all of opera.
