Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 107
by Dmitri Shostakovich
Cello20th CenturyConcerto~28 minprofessional
Written in 1959 for Mstislav Rostropovich, this concerto is a tour de force of modern cello writing. The four-note motto theme (D-S-C-H, the composer's musical monogram) permeates the work. The extended solo cadenza connecting the third and fourth movements is one of the most demanding passages in the cello repertoire. The orchestration is lean, featuring a prominent solo horn as a foil to the cello.
