Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 125
by Sergei Prokofiev
Cello20th CenturyConcerto~38 minprofessional
Prokofiev's last major completed work, extensively revised with input from Rostropovich. It is a thorough reworking of the earlier Cello Concerto Op. 58, expanded into a three-movement symphonic concerto of enormous scope and difficulty. The writing exploits the full range of the cello with lyrical cantilenas, biting scherzando passages, and a monumental theme-and-variations finale.
