Syrinx, L. 129

by Claude Debussy

FluteImpressionistCharacter piece~3 minadvanced

Originally composed as incidental music for a play about Pan, Syrinx has become the single most important solo flute piece of the 20th century. Its free, improvisatory melody evokes the mythological Pan playing his pipes. The haunting chromatic writing, with its absence of bar lines in the original manuscript, challenges the flutist to create a seamless, breathing musical line.
