Wiegenlied (Lullaby), Op. 49 No. 4
by Johannes Brahms
Voice (Soprano)PianoRomanticLied~2 minbeginner
Perhaps the most famous lullaby ever written, composed in 1868 for Brahms's friend Bertha Faber on the birth of her second son. The melody, with its gentle rocking rhythm, has permeated global culture far beyond the concert hall. Musically, Brahms cleverly wove a counter-melody from an Austrian folk song that Bertha used to sing to him. The song exists in countless arrangements for every conceivable combination.
