Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38

by Johannes Brahms

CelloPianoRomanticSonata~25 minadvanced

Brahms's first cello sonata, composed between 1862 and 1865, is a work of grave beauty in three movements. The opening Allegro non troppo features long-breathed melodies in the cello's rich lower register. The finale is a masterly fugue that pays homage to Bach's Art of Fugue while remaining unmistakably Brahmsian.

Historic Peters edition. Grützmacher's editorial additions are heavier than modern taste prefers but of historical interest.
